Other people have done it, so why not me? I'm indulging in a little SSP (shameless self promotion) :>)
'Shelter From The Storm' is my own favourite, so I'm delighted it was placed!
Thank you so, so much to those who nominated the stories, and to everyone who reviewed and voted. This was a fantastic start to the New Year!
This video shows the winner of "Ukraine’s Got Talent", Kseniya Simonova, 24, drawing a series of pictures on an illuminated sand table showing how ordinary people were affected by the German invasion during World War II. Her talent, which admittedly is a strange one, is mesmeric to watch.
The images, projected onto a large screen, moved many in the audience to tears and she won the top prize of about £75,000.
She begins by creating a scene showing a couple sitting holding hands on a bench under a starry sky, but then warplanes appear and the happy scene is obliterated.
It is replaced by a woman’s face crying, but then a baby arrives and the woman smiles again. Once again war returns and Miss Simonova throws the sand into chaos from which a young woman’s face appears.
She quickly becomes an old widow, her face wrinkled and sad, before the image turns into a monument to an Unknown Soldier.
This outdoor scene becomes framed by a window as if the viewer is looking out on the monument from within a house.
In the final scene, a mother and child appear inside and a man standing outside, with his hands pressed against the glass, saying goodbye.
The Great Patriotic War, as it is called in Ukraine, resulted in one in four of the population being killed with eight to 11 million deaths out of a population of 42 million.
Kseniya Simonova says:
"I find it difficult enough to create art using paper and pencils or paintbrushes, but using sand and fingers is beyond me. The art, especially when the war is used as the subject matter, even brings some audience members to tears. And there’s surely no bigger compliment."
okayI'm still here!
I wasn't feeling well for the last few weeks but I'm ok now! That was quite a scare but it wasn't cancer again...just a weak immune system. That still send me back to hospital because I had such a high fever!
So, I'm back and hopefully staying!!
All my love,
Mimi

okayI'm coming up for air after a very busy December!
I hope you all had a great Christmas or holiday time, and Santa brought you everything you wanted.
Thank you so much to everyone for cards and virtual gifts - to Dark, Elflover and Inwe for the Christmas cards; to Naledi, Chaotic Binky and Weeping Naiad for the virtual cookies, and to Weeping Naiad (again) for the e-card. Thanks also to Binky (again), Curious Wombat, Mary Alice, Inwe (again), NiRi, CC, Tena, Min, Elflover (again), Mistry, Vanimore, Ryo, Branwyn, Spiced Wine, Sally Daer and someone who didn't leave their name for the virtual gifts under my tree!
Thank you too to everyone on my flist for your comments, support and stories.
We've had a wonderful, relaxing Christmas - such a relief after the mad, hectic rush at work! Anne came up last Sunday, and Mike (her boyfriend) joined us on Christmas Eve. Mum came over on Christmas Day (she spends Christmas Eve night and Christmas morning with my brother) so we had a full house!
Christmas Day is also Mr Jay's birthday, so in the morning he opened his birthday presents and Anne and Mike opened their stockings, then after lunch and watching the Queen's speech (a traditional part of Christmas for us) we opened the rest. I got an iPod Touch from Mr Jay - I love it, and have been playing with it since then! In the evening we played Trivial Pursuit. I won :>)
The only thing wrong was that Stephen was missing - he and Liz are in Sydney on their round-the-world trip, but he phoned to say Happy Christmas. He's got a job in a very fancy restaurant overlooking the Opera House and Harbour Bridge, but unfortunately had to work all Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
Thank you to everyone, and I hope you have a great New Year!
